Clan Maczuszak-Szajniak

Clan matriarchs

Over 70% of Galicia’s population lived off the land. Existence seemed simple, with thatched huts, no running water, electricity, machines, and occasional armies marching through the mountain passes. Yet, agricultural productivity was one of the lowest in Europe because of primitive farm techniques, many little different from those used in the Middle Ages. There were famines in 1847, 1849, 1855, 1865, 1876, and 1889, with thousands starving. It seemed hopeless, and people left for a better life in the New World. Adding to the departure were the inheritance laws adopted in 1868, which stated that the land should be equally divided among the sons of a peasant. Galician peasants had large families, and the area was described as the most overpopulated place in Europe. The land was divided into so many small holdings that farming became uneconomical. In 1899, 80% of the plots had fewer than 5 acres, and many needed more food on their plots to support their families.

House Numbers

House numbers are important. They are versions of the postal and record-keeping system using addresses, so finding individuals in the same houses in Dudynce is excellent. For example, Onufry Kotlar is on the document because he was the father-in-law of Maria Szajniak-Kotlar. His being in the same house as Stefan and Katarzyna (House #70) at the time of his death means that Annie found the correct people.

Standing: Anna Szajniak Bozovich, Maria Szajniak Kotlar;

Maczuszak-Szajniak

Stefan Szajniak and Katarzyna Maczuzak-Szajniak were Anna Szajniak-Bozovich’s and Maria Szajniak Kotlar’s parents, my great-grandparents, and Annie Shayniak’s great-great-grandparents.

Stefan was born on 1 Jan 1852 in Dudynce House #5. He was living in Dudynce House #70 when he died on 3 Sep 1913 at age 61 1/2 years old. He died of “asthma” or some respiratory illness. (See 1. – under 1852) Dudynce Greek Catholic Parish Births.

Catherina (Katarzyna) Maczuszak-Szajniak

Seated is my great grandmother – Katarzyna (Catharina) Maczuzak-Szajniak who was born in Dudynce 15 Jan 1863.

Her parents were Michaelis (Michal) Maczuzak and Mariae Ambicka-Maczuzak. Katarzyna, widow of Stephanus (Stefan) Szajniak, died in Dudynce House #70 on 29 October 1918. She was 55 years old at the time of her death.

Katarzyna’s father was Michal Maczuzak, born on 6 Nov 1832 in Dudynce, died on 28 Dec 1894, age 62, son of Jan Maczuzak, born about 1798 in Dudynce, died 15 May 1850 age 52.

Michal was the grandson of Jerzy Maczuzak, born about 1770 in Dudynce, died on 23 Dec 1834 in Dudynce, age 64.
